Canoe Carving with Joe Martin

“We drove out to Hooksum to see master canoe carver Joe Martin and his students carve out two dugout canoes.

They used cedar trees to carve both of the canoes. One tree was over 800-years-old .

They made a big bonfire, then put over 200 rocks in the fire. After a few hours the rocks were red hot.

We watched them put water in the canoe then put the rocks in the canoe.

Then we watched the steaming process. They steamed the canoe to make it wide.”
